March’s Birchbox returns to the original format it first had back over six years ago, the original kraft box. Here’s my review of this month’s products.
My fifth Birchbox arrived in jazzy blue air mail packaging with cute fake country stamps printed on the corner.
This month Birchbox is celebrating 100,o00 UK subscribers and to celebrate it has created this throw back version of it’s monthly offering.
The box inside was plain brown cardboard and it looks very different to the boxes I’d received before. I’ve only seen the newer, more polished editions of Birchbox. It was interesting to see this box and how the subscription brand started originally.
In the package was also a little beige bag with coral writing on it saying “best day ever”. It’s a great extra for storing make up bits when you are travelling or jewellery.
In this box I received…
- Balance Me – Instant Lift Primer (full-size RRP £22)
- Rituals – The Ritual of Sakura Foaming Shower Gel (full-size RRP £4.50)
- Caudalie – Vine[Activ] Glow Activating Anti-Wrinkle Serum (full-size RRP £36)
- Batiste – 2-in-1 Invisible Dry Shampoo & Conditioner (full-size RRP £4.49)
- Benefit – They’re Real! Double the Lip in Pink Thrills (RRP £16.50)
Balance Me – Instant Lift Primer
Full-size RRP £22
Instantly this left my skin with a matte finish, covering pores and leaving my skin super soft, a perfect base ready for make up. It’s very good quality and smells fresh but not overwhelmingly perfumed.
I think for me this primer will have to be a treat, at the moment I couldn’t afford to use this as I’d go through it far too quickly. It’s a great product though, but better suited to those with a bigger budget than me (full size is only 15ml)! I’ll be using this on days when I feel like I need a boost.
Rituals – The Ritual of Sakura Foaming Shower Gel
Full-size RRP £4.50
This smells heavenly. Organic rice milk and cherry blossom. I love it and will be getting some more as soon as I’ve worked through the sample. The foam texture is thick and smooth, it feels very luxurious – a real treat. It has left my skin soft and hasn’t dried it out. I can imagine using this after a long day in the sun.
Caudalie – Vine[Activ] Glow Activating Anti-Wrinkle Serum
Full-size RRP £36
What a good smelling box this is! This serum smells of cucumber, and it’s so fresh and light. It’s not greasy at all and is a great addition to a skin routine as it doesn’t sit on the top layer of skin, it’s absorbed very quickly.
It’s designed to be applied twice a day in the morning and evening to improve skin elasticity and to protect skins from modern day stresses. The concentrated blend of antioxidants supports skin when dealing with tiredness, stress and pollution.
Apparently it has anti-cell burn-out complex™ – I have no idea what this is, but it’s meant to brighten dull skin. . It’s also meant to smooth out the early signs of fine lines, but I think you’d have to be using this consistency over a longer period of time to see any results of this nature.
Batiste – 2-in-1 Invisible Dry Shampoo & Conditioner
Full-size RRP £4.49
I use Batiste all the time. I love it, it’s great when you’re in a morning rush right through to surviving the five day festival. It’s in my box of tricks always getting me and my thick hair out of greasy dilemmas.
This evolution of the original product is a clever step up, it now includes a conditioner. The 2-in-1 formula cleans the roots of your hair but also nourish the ends without drying out your hair. It’s brilliant, does what it says on the tin and the new scent is a welcome change, the one I received was orange and pomegranate.
Reading up about the new product I also learnt about how to use it. I’ve been doing it wrong! Previously I’ve been applying the shampoo directly to my roots. With this version of the dry shampoo you spray it into the mid-lengths of your hair and brush the product through from your roots to tips!
Benefit – They’re Real! Double the Lip in Pink Thrills
Full-size RRP £4.49
I can’t pretend I’m good at lipstick. I’m not. I’m terrible. I couldn’t even apply this properly, so there isn’t a picture of it on my lips. But, I think with a bit of practice, this lipstick with it’s built in lip liner could be a saving grave for me. I just have to master not getting it all round my lips and looking like a five year old child who’s applied her mothers lipstick all over her face.
The lipstick is two colours together in a teardrop shape, a darker colour is at the tip, and a brighter, lighter one at the bottom. A bit like an in built lip liner. So when you apply it your top lip, the darker tip is pointing up and then to do your bottom lip you just flip it upside-down so the darker tip faces downwards.
The colour, Pink Thrills, is gorgeous, bright and moisturising. You just have to be very careful when you apply this lipstick as it does stain a little, so if you go wrong, like I did, it’s a bit difficult to hid it!
Also, sorry Benefit, but it didn’t last 8 hours, more like two, but seriously, who expects lipstick to stay on for more than a few hours anyway? I’ve always had to re-apply after a couple of hours, this is no big issue in my books.
I’m going to keep practising applying it, there are some great blogger videos that are really helpful if you pop it into YouTube!
This was another great selection of samples from Birchbox, some very useful products and wonderful new discoveries.
Have you got these products? Do you agree or disagree with my reviews? It would be great to know your thoughts on March’s box, feel free to pop me a comment.
