You’ve come a long way, baby…2017 goals

“We’ve come a long long way together, Through the hard times and the good, I have to celebrate you baby, I have to praise you like I should.” – Fat Boy Slim

Bright Lights Big City has grown a lot this year, to keep this momentum going and to keep challenging myself I’ve decided to set some blogging goals for 2017.

We’ve come a long, long way together…

The soundtrack to my planning session!

In 2016 there were no set plans, no goals for the blog. I started blogging 5 years ago, but never took it seriously. Blogging played on some of my largest insecurities – putting me and my writing out there. The biggest fear of course being rejection, that no one would want to read what I’ve written, or even worse, what if I wasn’t very good?

What if I am not good enough? Everyone feels this to some degree or another, more and less at certain times of their lives. But my Mum has always encouraged me to push myself, to get out of my comfort zones and to practice.

Support networks of family and friends are very important. By following that advice I’ve opened lots of doors, met some wonderful people and had the opportunity to be involved with some exciting experiences.

I was aware that blogging would help me but I didn’t know where to start or what to say, the fears took over and the blog lay dormant.

After doing a Masters and getting a job in PR, it became even clearer to me that I should be blogging. It’s a great way to self-promote, write regularly and make connections.

It took a long time but last year something changed, I’d been writing more at work and my confidence started to return a little. Something clicked.

Now that I’m putting more in, I’m getting more out. I’ve started to get recognition on my blog from industry peers, a dramatic increase in interaction and engagement and a network of other bloggers who give advice and help create new opportunities.

I had no set goals for 2016, apart from a desire to make an effort to do my blog and be consistent. It was a bumpy start.

This year I grabbed my new notebook and sat down to think about what happened, where I am and where I want to go.

I can’t wait to look back at these figures next year and see how they change.

What I could have done better in 2016…
  • Blogged more consistently
  • Planned more content and created a strategy
  • Been bolder, let go of my fears (I wish I hadn’t been so timid at my first blogging event!)

  1. I have come across your blog today and this post is awesome!!! As a new blogger I love reading posts like this as I find them encouraging and supportive if that makes sense. I think I should sit down and write some goals myself. X

    • Hi Michelle,

Great idea. I’ve not gone for very strict goals. Lots of other bloggers I read aim for specific numbers and other things.

Your message is really lovely, such kind words. I’ve found lots of support and encouragement through blogging – I’m sure you will too! Good luck, and stay in touch! x
