Birchbox November – my first subscription box
In my quest to learn more about blogging I am trying out different tools and techniques used by other bloggers.
Recently I wrote about ‘The six C’s of blogger boxes‘ – the phenomenal rise of subscription boxes and why they are beneficial. I think subscription boxes are really valuable whether you are just looking to try some new things out or use it as a blogging review tool.
Birchbox is one of the first and biggest beauty box subscription services. In November it teamed up with Tatler, which I think is what swayed me to pick it as my first. I’ve been reading Tatler since I was about 13, so I was very interested to see what their editors would pick for this box.
This is how the box arrived, I thought it might just come in a normal brown box, but this was a smart surprise. A refreshing change that there was no uneccessary packaging.
Birchbox tailors boxes to each member’s specific beauty requirements, so each one is a little different.
In this box I received…
- Beauty Protector – Protect and Detangle (full-size RRP £18.50)
- Nuxe – Crème Prodigieuse (full-size RRP £21)
- Marcelle – BB Cream Golden Glow Illuminator (full-size RRP £25.50)
- Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics – Lip Tar Primer (full-size RRP £15)
- ecoTOOLS – Brow Shaping Set (RRP £6.99)
Beauty Protector – Protect and Detangle
Full-size RRP £18.50
This is the product I will definitely be purchasing a full sized version of. I have thick long hair that takes a lot of taming. Most trips to the hairdresser are an ordeal that takes between four to six hours and the odd broken hair brush (I wish I was exaggerating – it’s funny but unbelievably embarrassing!). Anything that makes life easier, like this product, is going straight on my to-buy list!
Compared to other leave-in conditioners, this made my hair easy to comb through and left it without any residue or strange fragrance issues. But, the best bit was how soft it made my hair, I can assure you my hair is never soft. What a discovery! As you can probably tell I’m really chuffed about this find, it’s been a huge help in reducing the time I spend on my hair.
Full-size RRP £21
A great all round cream that gives a healthy glow and leaves skin velvety soft. It works well under make up and isn’t too greasy. This worked well for me but different creams work for different skins, so it’s always worth trying face cream out. I’d say this cream is the mummy bear of creams, not too thin, not too thick. If you want something to protect you from the elements I’d pick a thicker cream with an SPF.
Full-size RRP £25.50
This has rescued me on a couple of mornings when I’ve needed a bit of a radiance boost. For a BB cream, it evens out skin tone and illuminates but keep in mind that this particular one offers no coverage. I’ve got fairly sensitive skin, so the fact it’s oil free, perfume free and hypoallergenic is a bonus.
Full-size RRP £15
It’s not sticky, smells of peppermint and smoothes out any rough patches. It helped my lips recover from the harsh cold weather that had made them very dry. It also provided a great surface for the application of lipstick. I’m not sure how long prolonged my lip wear, but it did help my lip wear last a bit longer. Next application I’ll keep a better eye on the time.
These brushes are very soft, so I was surprised to read that they are made using synthetic bristles. They’ll be a great addition to my brush set and who knows, maybe the next time you see me I’ll look like Cara Delevingne?
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to try this out yet as I don’t have an eye brow product that requires a brush. Although I’m really impressed with Birchbox, I think this is probably a downfall of all beauty subscription boxes. Sometimes you need the accompanying product to be able to use what they send!
I can’t wait to experiment with all of these!
This was my first Birchbox and as I said earlier, I am really impressed with it. Not only did it give me a little boost, but also I found some new discoveries that really helped with my beauty routine. My biggest win from this selection has to be Beauty Protector because of the amount of time it saved me with my hair and the brilliant condition it left in.
After reading other peoples reviews and seeing the images they produce I think I seriously need to up my photo-game. I have a long way to go with styling my photographs! If anyone has any hints or tips, pop me a message or comment.
I hope these reviews helped you either discover a new product or make you think about trying a subscription box.
Did you get November’s Birchbox? If so, did you get something different to me? I’d love to hear your thoughts on these products.
